NCOA STUDY (1999) NATIONAL COUNCIL ON AGING

NCOA study conducted a survey of 2,069 hearing impaired individuals and 1,710 family members. The study examined perceptions and experiences of the patient and family members in two populations: Those who treated their hearing loss and those who didn’t.

-Respondents have more feelings of paranoia.
-Respondents were more likely to deny their hearing loss or the impact of their hearing loss on their life or the lives of others.
-Respondents were more likely to exhibit more anxiety symptoms.
-Respondents were more likely to report they “dwell on their mistakes” or “have an inferiority complex.”
-Respondents are viewed as confused, disoriented and unable to concentrate.
-Respondents were more likely to exhibit social phobias.
-Respondents are viewed as private, passive, shy, quite, easily embarrassed, etc.
-Respondents “believe they have little control over the events in their lives.”
